NEW ZEALAND BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY

New Zealand is home to some of the most incredible birds on earth. The Tui, The Kea, The Bellbird, Kokako and Fantail are just a few of these magnificent New Zealand birds that I have been lucky enough to photograph.

New Zealand Bird life is amazing to photograph and although I am primarily a landscape photographer, birds New Zealand also have my heart. NZ birds are a lot harder to photograph than your typical New Zealand landscape, and require quite a bit of patience, but the reward is oh so good when the NZ bird photo is a keeper

My first real experience photographing New Zealand Birds was when I visited the incredible bird sanctuary off Auckland's coast on Tiritiri Matangi Island. We were sailing to Great Barrier Island for a landscape photography trip but our captain decided we should take a slight detour and visit Tiritiri Matangi for some NZ bird photography, and what a detour it turned out to be.

New Zealand is home to many unique and diverse bird species, including:

The Kiwi: a flightless bird known for its long beak and nocturnal habits
Kea: a large, intelligent parrot known for its playful behavior and habit of damaging vehicles
Tui: a songbird with a distinctive call and iridescent feathers
Kakapo: a flightless parrot that is critically endangered
Fantail: a small bird with a distinctive fan-shaped tail
Weka: a flightless bird similar to a small rail

Bellbird: also known by its Māori names korimako is a passerine bird endemic to New Zealand
Woodpigeon: also known as the kereru, a large native pigeon with iridescent feathers.

These New Zealand bird species are important to New Zealand's ecosystem and culture, and many efforts are being made to protect and conserve them. I can't imagine a life without the sound of the bird New Zealand song.

I have been incredibly lucky to have photographed some truly special New Zealand Native Birds on my landscape photography adventures and it really is such a highlight to any hiking trip when some of the inquisitive birds come out to visit.

Bird nz photography can be a rewarding experience, as the country is home to many unique and beautiful bird species. Here are some tips for capturing great bird photos:

Research: Learn about the behavior and habitats of the birds you want to photograph. This will help you determine the best time of day and location to find them.

Equipment: Invest in a good camera and lens, and consider using a tripod or monopod for stability.

Patience: Birds can be skittish and hard to approach, so be patient and wait for the right moment to take your shot.

Hide: Use blinds or hide behind objects to conceal yourself and get closer to the birds.

Lighting: Pay attention to the lighting and use natural light or flash as appropriate.

Composition: Use the rule of thirds, leading lines, and foreground elements to create interesting compositions.

Respect: Remember to always respect the birds and their habitats, and avoid disturbing or harassing them in any way.

By following these tips, you can capture stunning bird photos in New Zealand and preserve the memory of these incredible creatures for years to come.

I hope by sharing these NZ images of New Zealand Birds it might inspire you to come and explore our native birdlife for yourself.
